The UNL System consists of three main components:
- the UNL itself, i.e, the set of UW's, relations and attribute's, and the UNL Document Structure, which is the set of rules to combine them;
- the lingware, i.e., the set of lexical databases (dictionaries, knowledge bases and example bases) and grammars that are used to process the UNL and each natural language
- the software, i.e., the set of tools (for UNLization, NLization and normalization) and applications that can be generated thereafter.
Recommendations
The UNDLF Recommendations have been stated by the UNDL Foundation in order to standardize the development of natural language resources (such as lexical databases and grammars) in the UNL R&D network. Although highly recommendable, they are not compulsory, as they concern subsidiary aspects of UNL. In any case, they must be followed by those interested in using UNDLF tools.

- The UNL Tagset is a harmonized system for representing linguistic constants.
- UNDLF Dictionary Specs
- The Dictionary Specs state the syntax of dictionary entries.
- UNDLF Grammar Specs
- The Grammar Specs state the syntax of grammar rules.
- UNDLF KB Specs
- The UNL Knowledge Base Specs state the syntax of the UNL KB.
