Words traditionally grouped together as adverbs serve a number of different functions: they can describe or modify a verb, an adjective, another adverb, clause, or sentence. In the UNL framework, adverbs are to be represented either as UWs or as attributes, depending on their function:

Adverbs of manner (how)
Adverbs of manner (such as cheerfully, fast, quickly, slowly, inadequately and healthy) are always represented as UWs and are linked to their modified by the relation man (manner);
Adverbs of time (when)
Adverbs of time (such as early, never, now, often, soon, then, today and tomorrow) are always represented as UWs and are linked to their modified by the relations tim (time), tmf (time from), tmt (time to) or fmt (from to);
Adverbs of place (where)
Adverbs of place (such as "above", "away", "below", "down", "here", "inside", "there" and "up") are always represented as UWs and are linked to their modified by the relations plc (place), plf (place from), plt (place to) or via';;
Adverbs of frequency (how often)
Adverbs of frequency (such as always, never, usually, frequently, sometimes, occasionally) are always represented as UWs and are linked to their modified by the relation tim (time);
Adverbs of degree (how much)
Adverbs of degre (such as almost, entirely, little, much, rather, very, too) are always represented as UWs and are linked to their modified by the relation mod (modification);
Adverbs of certainty and attitude (viewpoint and commenting adverbs)
Adverbs of certainty and attitude (such as certainly, definitely, probably, undoubtedly, surely) are always represented as attributes of modality);
Interrogative adverbs
Interrogative adverbs (such as why, where, how, when) are always represented by the null UW ("00") and the attribute .@wh;
Connecting adverbs (conjuncts and disjuncts)
Connecting adverbs (such as accordingly, also, anyhow, furthermore, however, moreover, otherwise, still, therefore) are represented as attributes;
